1968's The White Album: The 4 Sides

The Beatles followed up the over the top psychedelic imagery of 1967's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour with 1968's White Album which featured a plain white cover (which is where the album gets it's name as it's real name is actually simply The Beatles.) In some ways the music on the album is more stripped back and less elaborate than that on those previous two albums but that certainly doesn't mean it was a step back. In fact it'd be pretty easy to make the argument that with "Revolution 9" the band was stepping so far forward that we still have yet to reach where it's at 40 years later. This article is about the four sides of that incredible double LP.

Side 1 is mighty impressive. In fact I think if I had to choose just one side as the best (and I don't have to) I'd probably have to go with it. The one-two punch of "Back in the USSR" to "Dear Prudence" is truly outstanding and then there's "Glass Onion" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." Sure some would say that "Wild Honey Pie" isn't such a great song, and it's not really in the classic sense. It's a cool little experimental track that I think works for what it is. "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" isn't among my favorites although it has it's quirky charms. And then it finishes off in very strong fashion with one of George Harrison's greatest songs "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" followed by John Lennon's amazing "Happiness Is a Warm Gun." Holy cheeses. Side 1 of the White Album is truly extraordinary. My favorites right now are "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and "Dear Prudence."

Side 2 is as beautiful as Side 1 is brilliant. "Blackbird" has to be one of the most ultimate acoustic guitar songs ever written. "I Will" is a stunning ballad. "Julia" is poignant and touching. "Martha My Dear" is a great tune with a unique vibe to it. Not that the entire side is dedicated to beauty. There's the raw "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" and the somber "I"m So Tired" along with the silly (and very charming) "Rocky Raccoon." Really I don't think this side makes a single misstep with the possible exception of "Don't Pass Me By" which does limp through the finish line a bit!

Side 3 features the heaviest dirtiest rock of the album (and really of The Beatles entire career.) But of course The Beatles would never be so obvious as to make the entire side nothing but rockers, they've got the beautiful "Mother Nature's Son" and the hard to describe "Sexie Sadie" in there too along with George Harrison's somber little tune "Long Long Long" which finishes the side off. But it's "Yer Blues," "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey," and particularly "Helter Skelter" that really give the side it's identity.

Side 4 is arguably the least even side. It sort of seems to be where they put everything that didn't work on the other sides. And if I had to I would say it's the "worst" side of the four (but again, I don't have to!) That being said, to me it's just as essential as the other three sides. It's a part of The White Album. That is for sure. I'm not one of those people that talks about how much they don't like "Revolution 9" in fact I quite dig it. I think it's fantastic that The Beatles put something that absolutely bizarre and out there on their album and I do enjoy listening to it when I'm in that special place. "Cry Baby Cry" is among my favorite songs on the album too. - 20768

Playing An A Minor Chord on the Ukulele

To that end, we'll be using this article to learn our first minor chord to add to the major chords we've looked at already.

Explaining Minor Chords

You'll be familiar with minor chords as being the 'sad' sounding chords in songs. This contrasts strongly with the major chords we have looked at with their 'happy' sound.

To change a chord from being major to being minor takes just one note: the third.

In a major chord, one of the notes that makes up the chord is the note four frets higher than the root note. For example, in a C chord the third note is an E and the C chord contains an E.

The only difference with a minor chord is that the third note is only three frets over the root (that is one fret lower than in the major chord). So if the root is A, the minor third will be three frets higher: C.

How to Play A Minor

The big advantage of the A minor chords is that it only takes one finger to play it.

To play A minor fret the G string at fret 2 with your middle fingers. And let all the other strings ring open.

When you first play the A minor chord you might find that the underside of your middle finger is catching on the C string and stopping it sounding. Be really careful this doesn't happen as it is the C note that gives the chord its minor sound.

When chords are written up, they are often shortened. So you'll usually see Am used as a shortened form of A minor.

This A minor chord fits excellently with the major chords we have looked at so far. So if you're looking to write a song, all these chords will go together well. - 20768

Ukulele Chords:Playing a C Chord on the Ukulele

So you've just got your first ukulele and aren't sure where to start? In this series of articles we'll be taking you through all the chords you need to know to get started beginning in this article with the C chord.

When you first pick up the ukulele, the first chord you need to learn is C. As well as being easy to play and very common, C is the center of the whole music world.

No matter which instrument, the key of C will always be the center of the music.

Play the C major scale on the piano and it will become clear why this is - the C scale uses only the white notes.

To play the C chord, go to the A string (the one closest to the floor) and put your finger at the third fret.

When you play a fret, you should be holding down the string between the steel bar lines. In this case, between the second and third ones.

For soprano ukuleles, you'll want to press down somewhere around the middle of the fret.

For larger ukuleles - such as tenor and baritone ukuleles - you want to fret a little closer to the third fret bar. But be careful not to get too close. If you do get too close to the third fret bar you will start to hear the string buzzing which will distract from the tone significantly.

If you do hear any buzzing move back from the third fret a little (if this doesn't solve the problem, there are other factors that could be causing it such as the action on the ukulele being too low or a particular fret on the uke having been worn down by playing).

How hard to press down is a matter of practice. You should hold it down hard enough so that the note rings out clearly but not so hard that you distort the string and increase its pitch.

Check your fretting by playing the A string on by itself. Does that note sound brightly? Is it muffled? Does it sound like it is in tune with your other strings?

One way to check you are fretting correctly is to play the a string at the third fret and the C string open at the same time. If they sound good together, you are fretting correctly.

Once you have your finger on the A string and it is ringing clearly, you are done. All the other strings are played open for a C chord. - 20768

Do not speed up the tempo on the easier parts

A common beginner mistake is that they tend to speed up around these parts and then slow down dramatically when a more complex section of the song follows. A good practice for any beginner is to avoid looking at his or her hands when learning to play. Have the confidence on where the fingers are placed and get a good feel as the song goes along. While it seems a bit too much to ask for, it is a habit that a beginner should cultivate right from the start.

The benefit from not looking down when one plays, is that the eyes will be able to maintain focus on the scores, and always be looking ahead of the song to stay in control. Looking and correcting note by note is one of the slowest in most ineffective methods in learning how to play the piano.

There are many small hints and tips out there that beginners will find useful, but the simple way to look at improving piano technique is still via a consistent focus, and then a regular commitment of time. Getting a Record Deal is not Always Good

Many artists and bands often feel that getting signed by or being offered a recording contract is the ultimate goal of their musical ambitions. In some cases this can be true but generally it can be the start of a whole new bunch of problems that no musician could ever foresee or want.

These days a record contract is nothing more than a large sum of money to be recouped by the recording company through sales of your product. If it doesn't sell to expectation you still have to pay the money back somehow. The recording companies have the methods to make the product sell, get airplay and distribute the product. Music companies loan you the money to make the music then they sell the music to get their money back, giving you just a small percentage.

If you can get a recording company to get behind your music, that's good. But beware of recording companies who try to influence and change your sound, often to the point of rewriting your songs and even changing members of your band or, worse still forcing you to record songs made by other peoples.

Many times the band doesn't produce the sounds a company wants and the music get shelved. Since you signed with the company, they own you and you can't produce any music with any other company while under contract. You simply have to wait it out and this can take years. Just ask Billy Joel.

Often you will be all ready to record your songs and the record company will bring in a co-writer or producer who alters your compositions beyond all recognition to fit in with label's style. You started to make a hard rock album and you end up with a rap album with all your instruments removed and samples replacing them. You thought you were Metallica only to end up like Jack Johnson. Then you have to go and promote something you really hate and your product is no longer recognizable.

Beware the big advance of money, to make and promote your music. If it doesn't sell you will have to pay the money back, with interest, just like the banks. How do you pay it back? Live gigs, touring, radio shows, shopping centres etc for the next ten years. How do all those artists who make millions of dollars end up bankrupt? All the bills they didn't know they had to pay. They had so much fun, they never watched where the money was going. Read the fine print so you don't end up like MC Hammer.

Quite often musical differences between band members and record companies are solved by the company getting rid of and replacing any member of the band who doesn't agree with them. They are always trying to get work for their own players and artists who have already been signed. Quite often you will find all your guitar players work re-recorded by the studio guy or producer to fit in with the labels sound or smooth over tensions within the band.

Try to get famous on your own first. It will give you more leverage when you do get signed by a recording company that can take you to the next level. When you do sign, make sure to read the contract carefully. The music industry is about the business first and the music second. - 20768
